Photograph of a young Joaquín Balaguer, long-time president of the Dominican Republic, probably from the 1960s.

From Life magazine’s photo archives.

Since Trujillo pushed the envelope so far with the Generalissimo-ness it seems like Dominicans have ever since had an affinity for the ‘professorial’ President… Balaguer, Bosch, Leonel. Unfortunately eloquent speeches and educated words can go as far (further?) in disguising brutality and power as all the shiny tapitas and chevrons of the Jefe.

Dominican Republic’s Generalissimo Trujillo looks like a kid in a candy store paying a visit to  Generalissimo Franco in fascist Spain. Birds of a feather, though Franco apparently didn’t need plumage to show he was the jefe.

Ada Aimee de la Cruz Miss Republica Dominicana 2009 and 1st runner up for Miss Universe 2009.

Definitely beautiful and I believe she deserved the title of Miss Universe!

Hoy he Visto Algo Raro

This is the book every diasporan Dominican should read if they want to understand how they were made by history. In it our tribe’s greatest intellect Juan Bosch details the personal roots of our bloodiest tyrant, and lays out all the flaws centuries of conquest and colonialism built into our society. Brief and cutting, the work of a brilliant scholar feeling the urgency of the political moment he faced. Shortly after this Bosch became President … and shortly thereafter he was dispatched by the Empire, courtesy of the US Army.

Many diasporans would not be where they are and who they are if Trujillo had not occurred. Lots of us are here precisely because those troops went their to clean up his aftermath. So read at least one book about Trujillo, and make it this one.

With great ease the Empire can erase victories large and small. The champions and even the clowns of the tribes are quickly removed from the books.

Jack Veneno is a famous Dominican wrestler  … He is also a former NWA World Heavwyweight Champion, although his title reign is not officially recognized by the NWA. Outside the Dominican Republic, he is famous for his matches against Ric Flair.

Flair said that he let Veneno defeat him in order to avoid a riot among the Dominicans against him.
